I have a 1992 honda civic the car don't start it crank when I turn the key to the ignition not start I hear the click and the engine light stay on the code the engine light right is 19 { auto tanny lock up } it a 5 speed I test the map sensor and I get 5.4 volt there no spark I change the whole distributor and still no spark I am thinking maybe a bad ecm but I don't want to spend $150 on a use part I don't need so what would be the next step should I take in find out why this car would not start is there any way I can test the ecm.

Run through the tests, outlined in Sections A and B, below:

Yes. Does the CEL come on and go off after 2 seconds, when the ignition switch is turned to ON? Do you hear the fuel pump run, during this period?

Check Engine Light (CEL) Tests. If the CEL does not go out, most Civics will not spark and the fuel pump will not run. Therefore, all efforts should first be directed to correcting the problem(s) that prevent you from being able to answer "Yes" to the three basic diagnostic questions below:

a. Turning the ignition switch to ON (or position II), not START, does the CEL come on and then go off after 2 seconds? If not, the problem is with the ACG (ALT) (S) 15 amp fuse, in the under-dash fuse/relay box; ECM (perform the K-Test); Main Relay; or the Ignition Switch. Perform tests in that order.

b. When the CEL goes out, do you hear and/or feel the Main Relay "click"? If not, repair or replace the Main Relay.

c. During the 2 second interval that the CEL is on, do you hear the fuel pump in the gas tank run? If not, check that the fuel pump works by jumping terminals 5 and 7 on the main relay connector and then turning the ignition switch to ON.

Be sure to test all under-dash and under-hood fuses with a test light or multimeter. Here's how:

I have tested all the fuses and all are good the cel stay on when I jump it read code 19 a/t tranny lock up and it a 5 speed and like I said I test the map sensor and it give me 5.4 volt so what else do I need to do or check to get the cel to come off since you said most civic would not spark or fuel pump I have buy this car at a auction and when I got it had no ecm I buy a use one which came out of a automatic tranny car does this matter

I believe your problem is that the ECM is not compatible. You installed an ECM for an automatic, not a manual, transmission. It makes a BIG difference! That's why you get a Code 19, which is not even applicable to your car.

Yes it stay on that why I jump it to read the code and it give me a code 19 which is a/t tranny lock up something like that and it a 5 speed could it be it and ecm for and automation tranny car that why the lite stay on I did think it would matter

You likely need an ECM with OEM part #37820-P06-A00, A01:

While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList.aspx?PartType=248&PTSet=A)

You might be able to find an inexpensive ECM on Ebay or at a local salvage yard. Carefully check the part number out. You may even want to call your local Honda parts department to verify the correct part number.

Yes, I think you have the wrong ECM--it will never work in your Civic.

OK I will buy one and see if that work hopefully it would I buy a use one maybe on eBay should the car atlest start up even if the only diff is the tranny

If you buy the proper ECM, the CEL should go out, after 2 seconds, and the car should start. The ECM that you have now will never work in your car--try and sell it.

. Do you hear the fuel pump run, when the ignition switch is turned to ON?

. Is it the correct ECM for your car?

. Do you have spark?

. Have you cleaned the main ECM ground on the thermostat housing?

You need to hear the fuel pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds, when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

Yeah I am pretty sure that what I hear any other way to check it what the next step

. Check all under-dash and under-hood fuses with a test light or multimeter.
. Do you have spark?

Check/replace the Ignition Control Module and coil inside the distributor. AutoZone can test these items for free.

OK I got spark and I did the k test eveything good but the car still would not start it crank and seem like it want to start this car had not been sitting for over a month and weather here is average 5 degree yeah that right 5 degree so I am thinking maybe it too cold to start I had my friend crank it wild I went and smell the end of the exhast and I can smell gas so it getting the gas right ? I am thinking maybe I should heat the garage up and let the car warm up then start it any idea ?

What did you do to get spark?

shawn0634
Jan 24, 2008, 07:04 PM
It a lx with a 1.5 5 speed

shawn0634
Jan 24, 2008, 08:14 PM
Someone crank it wild I check all the wire all the wire were given spark

TxGreaseMonkey
Jan 24, 2008, 08:24 PM
The only thoughts I have are that the Ignition Control Module is bad, internal distributor sensors are bad, or the ignition timing is off. I'd feel better if you checked the ICM and coil. It's possible to have spark, but it doesn't really fire when it should--therefore, the car won't start.

HAVE YOU CLEANED THE MAIN ECM GROUND ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING?

shawn0634
Jan 25, 2008, 12:23 AM
Well it look like it have on a use distributor so if they replace it and put it back wrong there it would not start right ? Is the ecm ground on the thermostat housing cover in anything cause I try to look for it but there no ground there unless it hiding some where

TxGreaseMonkey

The 3-wire brass connector, mounted with a 10 mm bolt, should be on the thermostat housing. It's imperative that you locate and clean this important part of the wiring harness. The black ground wire goes to the ECM.

OK I got the honda started I am not sure what did it but I replace it with the original distributor and make sure the timing was correct I think the timing was off and I open the air intake box and she start right up after that now the wiper don't work I check the fuse and it good any idea ? Thank for your help
