My son's father had just gave up all rights to my son, who just turned two. I have read and understand that he is still responsible for "child support". He signed paper drafted by my lawyer, who was doing this for free. I have two questions. 1) Will the signed document by my ex is enough to take to court (when my fiancé wants to adopt my son after we are married) or do I need to do anything now in court to make this document legal? And 2) If I want to change my son's name to my surname... how do I do this?

If the father is paying child support, he could be successful if he decided to pursue his paternal rights. There is a procedure to change a child's name; what state do you live in? Call your county courthouse or your lawyer for more information. You will most likely have to have a judge sign an order.

As for the name change I had it done for my son. I went to a lawyer paid 500 dollars. The biological father has to sign saying you may change the name. I believe it is similar for an adoption, although I have not done that yet.
