Anybody know of a good, non-toxic (non sevin dust, non other poisonous) way to deal with aphids?

I had them on my tomatoes for the first time last year and they were a bugger (so to speak). I prefer to not use poisons so tried different ways -- an organic spray from a nursery, and from Wal-Mart, both of which were a bit expensive and didn't go very far (but worked pretty good for a while -- though the aphids would come back) I tried a NAPTHA soap solution that worked (though not as well -- and learned to use rubber gloves with it 'cause it'll burn you if you don't). It is just two months (well, maybe three) till planting season and I am trying to get a heads up in case I have this aphid thing again.

Has anyone had any luck ordering lady bugs over the internet? They are suppose to be aphid gobblers and they are not terribly expensive, I just wondered if anyone has tried it and if so did they have any luck.

Thanks,

P.S. if anybody wants some NAPTHA soap, I have extra bars.

I know that ants are effectively killed by using aspartame powder on them. I get some Sweet N Low packets (don't use the stuff myself I just buy for my ant buddies) and sprinkle the white powder on the ants and ant piles and down ant holes. In a few days they are gone. In foreign countries aspartame is used as a bug killer in sugarfields.

I would think this would work on aphids as they are a lot like ants and in the same insect phila. Plus your tomatoes would not have any honey bees polinating them as the tomatoes would have already seen the bees come and go. Hey, it's worth a try as aphids are no fun when you want to eat a juicy home grown tomato. Hey, I'll take some tomatoes, but pass on the soap. LOL.

Mix a 1-4 ratio of dish soap and water. Put in spray bottle and spray. Do this of an evening. Do not use in the hot sun. THis will kill aphids
