Can my phone line be at fault given that:-
1.Router (and my laptop)connect OK at sons house (3 miles away)
2.My laptop mostly connects to ISP first time. Rarely I have to pull out & reinsert the usb conn
3.Original phone master socket crudely rerun & jointed some 10 metres.Into/out of loft.
4.Phone works OK
5.I have cleaned and tidied up two wire phone system.Other wires go nowhere

AN IDIOTS GUIDE WOULD BE MOST WELCOME

It seem that the problem is the phone lines --- or the modem ---

But the phone works so it may not be the phone lines -- not configured right

Most modems have a CD that is used to install the modem --- has that

Been done --- If you are on Windstream their number is 1-888-292-3827

Call your isp provider and see if there is anything they need to enable

If you pay for internet service they should help you get it -- Good Luck

Are you using DSL filters properly on all phones. No more than 5 and no filter on the modem?

I'd also loose the USB connection and go Ethernet.

Thank you for reply. Only one phone in bungalow and fitted with dsl filter.

As I understand it modem is built into the belkin router
Son says router should connect to isp without having to be connected
To the laptop.Just installed (to power and to filter)now with at best 3 flashes
At adsl lamp.

There should be only one filter on the one phone. No filter at the modem. Some filters have two ports, 1 being filtered. One not. Make sure the phone is plugged into the right one.

My modem, a Westell, takes a fairly long time to establish a link when unplugged. Maybe like 30 seconds or so.

I doubt is has to be configured properly in order to get the ADSL Link light.

How far your away from the DSLAM and whether load coils are place on your voice line will determine your qualification. Inside wiring can also contribute.

To rule out inside wiring connect the modem to the test port on the NID outside. Remove the jumper and insert the modem. All the phones in the house will be disconnected.

Sorry Mr keepitsimple etc but I can't handle this advice. Too technical for my
73 yr old brain especially as yesterday at my bank I collapsed in a dead faint
And spent it mostly at the a&e dept.
Perhaps I could return to this later

I hope you feel better. Your son should be able to handle the instructions, I hope.

If you face similar issues with Belkin router you can always reset and reconfigure it. You can follow the instruction here Reset Belkin router (http://www.mentorlog.com/2011/networkingwireless/how-to-reset-belkin-router.html)
