I am installing a sump pump and would like to know if the discharge pipe should be buried or left above ground? I f I bury it it needs to be below the frost line and my concern is , during heavy use ( a sudden thaw) will the ground be able to absorb a large volume of water?
Thanks for any advice. Scouser

If you want to bury the dischage line you could create a drain field like with a septic tank. I laid out 200' of perforated plastic pipe with a cloth covering in a trench I dug with a ditchwitch. This was a fairly big task and depending where you live it may be better done in the Spring. A discahge pipe laying on top of the ground is OK as long as it lays on a slope away from the house. Most sumps will pump all winter and the area around the end of the pipoe will almost never freeze because of the 55 degree water being pumped out.
