I would like to know how people cope with college loans that they can not afford to repay.

What happens to people who have over $100,000 in college loan debt and do not have the resources or good job to be able to repay?

Are wages garnished? To what degree? Other assets taken away?

I would really like to hear what other people have experienced...

Hoping my question doesn't get lost...

You can often extend the loan periods. You will have ten years and more to repay, and certainly you will find jobs that pay well.

Have you consolidated as many loans as you can and gotten the best interest rate?

Oh, I am only trying to figure out the what ifs... I am very hopeful of being able to repay, and I actually had heard it might be a 30 years schedule...

It will all be in subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans... but I'm wondering if it will mean $1000 to $1500 monthly... how people cope with not being able to come up with that?

From what my son has told me (and he owes only slightly less than you do), it can be made very manageble. The lower the interest rate, the better off you are. Think of it as a chess game.
