quadratic formula x=(-b (+or-) square root((b^2)-4ac))/2a for any quadratic function y=ax^2+ bx + c. there will be an imaginary root if (b^2)-4ac) is negative, because there will be an imaginary root if the number inside the square root is negative. For your question there is an imaginary root because (4^2)-4(-2)(-10) is negative.
