My boyfriend lives in mass. He has no dependents and is single. What kind of w2 form does he need for the state of mass? (note that mass has state tax)

If he was an employee, his employer will send him W2 before Jan 31, 2008. W2 has information about his total wages for 2007 and all the taxes withheld.

Your boyfriend will need to file his 2007 tax return in which he must report his total income for 2007. The due date is April 15, 2008.

I asked what KIND of w2 form should he fill out like 1040EZ, 1040, 1099... Does he need something different because MA has state tax?

AlyssaRox32:

The W-2 is a form provided by your employer to the employee to summarize what he earned in 2007, how much in federal, Social Security and Medicare taxes were withheld and (for your boyfriend) how much Massachusetts state income taxes were withheld.

The W-2 is sent to the employee, to the IRS, to the state of Massachusetts and to the Social Security Administration.

The W-2 must be attached to the federal and Massachusetts state tax returns.

He should have gotten the federal and state tax booklets in the mail already. He can mail the returns in, or he can go online to a tax preparation website (I recommend TaxAct.com) and prepare and file his return on-line. The IRS started accepting returns TODAY.

If he want, he can go to Internal Revenue Service (http://www.irs.gov) and see if he qualifies to efile for free.

The resident tax return forms (for federal return) are 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040. Which form you will file depends upon the complexity of your tax return. If you just have wages income below a certain limit, 1040EZ should be OK.
Just like W2, form 1099 is not tax return form. They forms are used by the payee to report income paid to an employee or any other person or entity.
