We are wanting to file online early this year, but do not have our w-2 yet. We have the last check of the year with the year to date info. Can we file with this, and if so, how?

You could IF you are confident the info on the check stub is completely accurate (may not include year-end bonuses, or consideration for 401K contributions) AND if you knew your company's Tax ID number (you may be able to get that from last year's W-2, but what if it changed? ).

However, the IRS is NOT YET ACCEPTING tax returns, either electronically or in the mail, so what's the hurry?

We are needing to file now, and yes I know the IRS does not take efile until Jan 11, but I can file and they will hold it until then. I do believe I have everything I need to file from my pay stub, and I do have the ID number also. Thank You so much.

You should wait till you receive your W2.

I agree... I would definitely wait to get your W-2 before filing. If you miss something, it will take you a lot more time to straighten out that mess. Legally, your employer has to mail your W-2 to you by January 31, so waiting shouldn't really hold you up very long.

Hello

I agree, please wait for your own good. Correcting mistakes is a painful process.

Hope this helps!

Angjay8:

MukatA, VTE and sherick11 ALL make good points; you should wait for the W-2.

But if you are bound and determined to proceed, you CAN efile effective today (10 Jan 08).

If you enter the information from your check stub in the correct boxes on the W-2 mask in the tax software, you should be able to efile today.

However, if you file today, the EARLIEST you will get the refund is 25 January 2008. If you wait for the W-2 and efile no latewr than Tuesday, 15 January 2008, you will STILL get the refund on 25 January 2008 and you will KNOW the W-2 is correct.

All this assumes that you are NOT getting a Refund Anticipation Loan, which are complete rip-offs and should be avoided at all costs.
