Does anybody know what animators use to do animation. I don't think a lot of them use paper very much anymore, but if so, how would they do it by paper? If they use software what software do they use? IF they use a machine, what machine do they use? Basically the process of animation.
(Ha! Sounds like process of elimination:p )
And this isn't 3d animation I mean actual anime animation.

As far as software most movies now use Maya, which you can get for your PC. It costs about 2 thousand last time I checked, also there is 3d studio max and a bunch of others.
If you are interested in 3d animation there are lots of free 3d programs out there most are incomplete except one that is considered to be the best open source software there is, even being taught in some colleges. It is called Blender. It has as much tools as the ones I mentoned and is free. You can use it for 2d animation as well hope this helps

Blender is the best there is I believe some have used it for 2d animation but I think you have to rig the models but not sure. Go to Blender Artists Forums - Powered by vBulletin (http://blenderartists.org/forum/) and ask
You have to register first.

I just wanted to add that aside from all of the tutorials they have online for Blender, there are at least two books on Blender. One is called character animation with Blender and the other I believe is call Essential Blender. You will also need a paint program for texturing
Photoshop is expensive but there is one called Gimp. It is free and better reviewed then some other paint programs. Take a look at the link
This is a movie made from Blender. You will see particles for smoke, hair, etc. Motion blur,
Voluminous lighting, etc. blender also supports sound, sync, has a physics engine a game engine, etc
YouTube - Elephants Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsGEWHNJ3s8)
Take your time learning and have fun. It was hard for me when I first started but once you get going it's great. I know of some professional artists that use maya, and 3d studio max but prefer Blender
Below my webpage the 2d art was made with Gimp, and the 3d art blender

Hi
I'm a producer working at an animation studio called Ontwerp, our guys mainly use Maya to model and animate and then after effects to composite. There is a way of rendering your 3d image out as 2d but I'm not quite sure how as I am the producer and don't do it myself.
Check out our work at ONTWERP.TV (http://www.ontwerp.tv) and contact me if you need more info.
Kind Regards

One way of making that kind of animtion in Blender is to make a 3d model of it and of course rigging the model If you look at my 3d page you will see a few models one is Hulk
And he rendered two ways, using aTOON shader he will look 2d and that's what you can do
With your project. Once you get the models finished there is no limit how to animate them
