So as you rent you are to save up for a down payment to own your own home.

First credit cards are a sign you are spending more money than you are making, this is a bad sign. Also credit card debt over what you can pay off a balance is one of the largest problems in america causing many people to go bankrupt.

So part of a getting out of debt is to have an emergany fund, built up so that you have some money in case something serious happens.
