What kind of contractor/repair person do I need? I have a crack in the brick on the side of my house from the ground up to the first floor just behind the front porch. I need someone to look at it and repair it before it gets worse... I don't have money to spend for expensive work, however, I know it will only get worse if I don't deal with it. Is the separation getting wider ? You must check the foundation first

Samrose - What Caibuadday answered you with is really where your problem lies,and always has. The foundation is settling,and that is where you will have to start your repairs, is your house on a concrete slab?? OR on a conventional floor, What kind of foundation did the brick set on?? was it as per the building codes? These are some of the questions you are going to have addressed,to find out the cause and what kind of repairs you are looking at. IF I were you, I would Get a exper. House building contractor to come and look at your problem, Perferabley a lisened one with several years exper. Maybe even a building inspector. NOTE- IF you make repairs to only to the brick walls, it won't be LONG and it will be right back where you are now. As stated, you need to understand what's happening.

For ex... my home is almost 60 years old. All the homes in this area have had some settling and most need some tuck pointing. My foundation is fine... it just the normal settling that occurs with a brick home.

I called a local mason supply store and asked for a referral for a mason. They gave me a guys name that they thought was best in the area. He came out, inspected, and gave a good bid. His work was heads above some of the jobs that have been done at other peoples houses here.

So... you need to know your reality and you need to know the truth. In my case, asking the person to come out and give an opinion and a bid was free.
