I'm purchasing a new Kenmore electric dryer which I am told uses a 30 amp circuit. I have not yet seen the specifications for this new dryer.

My existing 13 year old Kenmore electric dryer is plugged into a 3 blade receptacle where all blades are flat. I am told that this means it should be a 50 amp circuit behind the receptacle. The existing dryer has been running on this circuit for 4 years.

If it is true that the new dryer runs on a 30 amp circuit and the actual circuit is 50 amp, is it safe for me to run the new dryer on the existing circuit? If not, what is needed to make these compatible?

Since this is existing, the three wire system is allowed to remain. Just need to bond the neutral and ground at the dryer.

To protect the dryer properly, use a 2 pole 30 amp breaker on the wire and outlet you have.

All though, if at all possible, best to install a new #10-3 with ground 4 wire cable and a four wire cord and plug.
