One step at a time and check to see if the set up works
Use a HDMI cable to hook up Direct TV to the HDTV.
Then program the TV
Then hookup the recorder to the Direct TV box. Use the
s-video cable here. Then program the recorder.
The output of the recorder to the HDTV

Dahlfunz,

HDMI cables are terrific cables providing you have ports for them. No argument from me on that!

Knowing that Directv sets up the equipment for customers, what has changed at your place.

Did you introduce the DVD recorder?

The controller from Directv, is it a dual input controller with a hard disk to record programs or is it a stand alone High Def receiver?

With Directv, in order to watch a program and record another program, you need their HD-DVR unit. This unit provides input to two on board tuners and output to TV or AVR.

I use an Audio Video Receiver. And just for the record, true High Def meets the 1080P spec. 1080I is also High Def. The difference is the screen refresh process. 720I is also a HD but at a lower screen resolution of 720 instead of 1080 per inch.

Anyway, does your TV have a HDMI input port. If it does, then does your DVR have HDMI Input and Output ports?

Assuming the answers are yes, then connect the output of the Directv controller to the input of the DVR. Connect the output of the DVR to the Input of the TV.

Dahlfunz,

Close. The Sat box supplies the input to the DVR. The DVRs output is then sent to the Input of the TV.

To Just watch TV, you can actually leave the DVR off. Channel selection is handled by the Sat Dish Controller.

If for some reason, the DVR has to be on, then use the DVR's toggle switch to change from DVR to TV.

Also, you might want to use the dish controller's remote to control the DVR and TV. The controller's remote should have Ifr. OEM codes on board.
