Hello,
My sister bought a house in Dutchess County about almost 2 years ago.. it is a split level ranch style home.
She has had an on going problem with a sewer type smell that has become progressively worse. What happens is anytime water is run (flushing toilet too much, use of washing machine, running taps etc) the smell will begin.. it mainly sticks in the basement and lower level of the house. She has a sump pump in the basement.. and originally the smell would originate from there. She has had EPA come.. they did nothing.. she had a plumber and they said it was not plumbing.. she had someone with a camera to look at the pipes they said it is fine.. she has had septic people and they replaced a pipe from the house to the septic.. but smell still there. She has called the Dutchess County Dept of Health and they say to call a plumber again.. and he is coming again next week. She has had the septic tank checked and they said it is fine.
She poured bleach down the sump pump hole and covered it.. and now the smell is coming through the lower level bathroom... also now she is starting to see moisture on one corner of the basement wall.. which is the side of the house with the septic tank and leech fields.
We are at wits end.. she can't even take a shower in her own home.. or wash clothes anymore.. she has a 9month old son.. and I am so worried that this smell will never go away... can someone with some expertise please give us a direction to go.. we want to repair the problem not mask it.. so please any and all help would be so appreciated!
Desperation here!
