My furnace will kick on for a few seconds and then kick right back off. 3 or 4 seconds later it will kick back on and run until it reaches the correct temp. I tried to turn it down to 60, but it seems as though that made it worse so I turned it back up to 70.
My questions is will this be OK for a couple of hours until my husband comes home from work or do I need to shut the furnace off and leave?

Unless your husband is familiar with furnaces, I would call a heating service.

He has fixed the thermostat before this one and another house that we lived in.. . it was doing the same thing then... of course he was at home that day... a trip to the hardware store and it was fixed in about 15 minutes.. Our neighbor and his friend is a heating/ac man.. but I was trying not to bother anyone, they all work out in the field... I think I will just take my animals turn it off and leave... Because it is starting to click on and off more oftne. He'll be home around 3pm EST. Hopefully my pipes will not freeze in that length of time... they are insulated. But it is only 19 degrees... lol what a quandry... maybe your right I need to call a heating company. *edit* I was hoping for a quick answe, I just thought one of the heating people may be online... because I would not want an electrical fire from it turning on and off so quickly, that may not even be a possibility...

Thermostat was the problem and is now fixed. My neighbor said I was in no danger of having an electrical fire. That there is a relay switch... over my head... just happy to know.
He said turning the switch up and down several times a day is what probably tore it up.. He doesn't suggest buying them from a hardware store or switch flipping as my daughter has a bad habit of doing.
