Is there anyway to easily get wooden windows un-stuck. We have hardly opened them since we recently moved into an 18 year old custom built home.

It is important to understand what causes them to stick. Is it paint, settling or moisture? Do you have an idea what is causing the problem?

I had a problem with a top window sash being stuck at the bottom of the window. No paint. I think the windows were a little warped and I later learned they were stuck like that for over 5 years before we bought the house.

Anyway, I sprayed some WD40 down the sides of the windows and used a pry bar and block and slowly rocked the bar back and forth with one hand while pulling up on the window. I don't know if the WD40 helped, but the window worked free.

Good luck.

You lucked out, WD 40 may be great for metallic parts but not wood. It soaks into the wood and often makes swelling worse.

That's great to know ballenger, I always figured WD40 was like Duct Tape... the cure all for everything. Maybe I'll get lucky and the wood will swell so the sash doesn't fall down and get stuck again.

Good one holtz, I guess it really is a bit like duct tape.
