Hi all,
In my good-old PC was a mainboard change because the earlier one went wrong, both of them have onboard LAN, and after the change in my WinXP Pro the internet connection (cable modem) slowed down, precisely speaking it may lost for a while (cca 70-80% of time). When it works it is very fast.
I've taken the followings:
1. updated the new MAC address at my ISP, reset the cable modem
2. netsh int ip reset
3. netsh winsock reset
4. DNS service up
5. ipconfig /flushdns
6. DNS service down (because I've a large hosts file)
7. ipconfig /release
8. ipconfig /renew
9. shutdown the PC and unplug the cable modem
10. After five minutes plugged in the modem and booted my PC
... and meanwhile I rebooted a few times

But the slowdowns are the same.
Here are some additional info:
1. netsh diag gui shows that it cannot ping the DHCP server and there is in the list the ethernet of the earlier motherboard (VIA Rhine-II)
2. msinfo32 shows the earlier (already non existent) ethernet adapter as well
3. it cannot be a (serious) hardware problem: I have opensuse 10.2 installed too and with it the connection works properly.

Can anyone help me please?:confused:

Problem is only with your Operating System. As you said you are running Windows XP on you OLD machine . Please check the minimum requirements for running Windows XP. Is it meet your PC?

Here Microsoft say they required min 128 mb of RAM but with my experience XP required Min of 512 MB RAM.

Since you played with the cables:

Ping your router with a high packet size, like 8192 and continuous
This is a gross test for bad cables.

Then use an excellent speedtest site for finer results:

Argonne National Lab NDT server (http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/)

And check for excessive packet loss. This will indicate a bad cable.

The problem is resolved: my firewall didn't tolerate the lan card change. I installed Comodo and its working fine.
