Box#7 of Form 1099-MISC is "Non-Employee Compensation".

That is the total amount someone or some company paid you for contract work in 2007.

It is NOT what you need to pay in taxes.

The R-1 visa is considered a WORK visa, so you must pay taxes on the money earned while working under the R-1 visa.

If you have been in the U.S. under the R-1 visa EVERY day in 2007, then you must file Form 1040 with Sshedules C and SE to report your income earned on the Form 1099-MISC.

If you were NOT in the U.S. every day, you will file:

- as a dual-status alien if you arrived BEFORE 2 July 2007.

- As a non-residnet alien if you arived AFTER 1 July 2007.

Thanks so much ATLANTA TAX EXPERT!

1) How do I know how much to pay taxes ?
2) It's a total of about $2000 - Is there some kind of percentage how much taxes that represents ?
4) Where do I find the forms u talked about ?
3) The 1099 states 2006. I have left the US since then and never paid my taxes yet. Is it going to cost me extra money ?

You will owe ZERO income taxes.

Your self-employment taxes (which applies ONLY IF you were in the U.S. prior to 2 July 2006) will be about $300.

If you were NOT in the U.S. for over 183 days, then you do not even have to file.

What were your dates in the U.S.?
