View Full Version : Brown discharge, but no period at all

I guess I better start from the beginning...

I first started having a period at 13 years old, had one once a month after that up until the age of 14 or 15 and than the periods started skipping a lot and I wouldn't have one for 6 months apart, maybe less, maybe more. I started having this weird brown discharge that started at the age of 17, and it would happen every once in a while. I finally made an appointment with a gyno about this problem and all she said was it was normal and she didn't feel it was a good idea for me to have a pap smear because I wasn't sexually active yet (that was 4 months before I started having sex), so all she did was put me on birth control to start my periods, which did help, but I found out that I can't take any kind of birth control, it makes me very sick to where I can't get out of bed, makes me feel nauseated, and gives me bad aches and pains in my legs (I have learned that some other women have this problem with birth control also). So I thought that wasn't much help, so after I was sexually active I went to another gyno. He talked to me in his office and said that I would probably always have a hard time getting pregnant because it seems like I'm not ovulating and the brown discharge could be a form of a period, but he wasn't sure, which doesn't make sure. So he gave me a pap smear to make sure it wasn't any kind of infection and that came back clean. So he put me on birth control also even when I told him I couldn't take it, he said that the ring wouldn't be so bad, well it was for me. I went on it a week later and than went off it the next day because I woke up and I felt like I had a fever and I felt as if I had to throw up. Also, those rings are hard to get out of you since they go all the way up to your cervix after you insert one.

Anyway, I wish I knew what this brown discharge was. They found a cluster of cysts in between my uterus and cervix, which I thought could be the problem as to why I wasn't having a period, but I was told that it was normal and some women get those, they're like little pimples that come and go. It doesn't smell and sometimes it does have a little blood mixed in with it, but very little. It's just kind of embarrassing when you go to have sex and you have this brown discharge actually flowing out of you and you don't know when it's actually going to start because it happens at different times.

It can't be normal or healthy that I'm just getting a period once a year now. I just can't find a good gyno that will actually help me instead of giving me birth control I can't take.

Anyone else have this problem?
Or does anyone kind of have an idea about this?

Thank you!

The brown discharge may very well be a "period". However, given that your are not on a hornomal form of birth control, and it is irregular, I would look for a reproductive endocrinologist to check your hormone levels and determine if they are off.
