I was reading other posts on this site and I came across one that is very simmiler to my case, he sounded like a jerk, but I guess I am no better. I work at an electornics store and recently tried to steal 4 Xbox 360s. I put them all in a different box and a coworker carried them out to his friends car. They have video footage of my involvement-a cop came and told me I was under arrest, but he never handcuffed me, didn't read me my rights, or give me a "promise to appear", he said he would call me in a week. I know I made a huge mistake. I'm an adult and have had a couple run ins with the law before(I once tried stealing a pair of shoes). I was wondering what the consequences could be? The loss prevention officer took my written statement-but the cop never clearly told me what I was being charged with(theft over or under-but it must be under)... I'm really scared and confused and worried that I've made the biggest mistake of my life.

There was one on here before from a friend who carried them out I think, I wonder if that was your partner.

Well first you were not arrested if you were not given a ticket or taken into the station ( at least in the US, can't speak for how they do it in Canada.

But most likely what will happen is that the evidence will be presented to the DA, and perhaps a grand jury who will indict and then you will have a warrant for your arrest issues,

If I was you.
1. hire an attorney
2. pre arrange with a bails bondmens to get out if arrested

** you make a confession?? Well that breaks rule 3 never confess even if caught red handed, make them prove the case with evidece.

But get the attorney number one thing to do

Well the cop told me that if I didn't pick up my phone when he called that he'd get a warrant for my arrest then-i have had preliminary talks with a lawyer and will resume in full after christmas-I've never heard of a situation completley like mine before-i think it's weird I was never read my rights or given a charge. Thank you for your help, by the way.

Cop is lying to you, don't know why, that is just silly, guess he was having fun messing with you.

Rights, you have this really confused, first often rights are not given if you are not questioned, so if the officer was merely doing a report and reviewing the information you gave the store loss prevention, the loss prevention basically did the questioning prior and they are not obligated to give you any rights. But if he did not give you any rights, if you told him things, you did not tell loss prevention, it can not be used in court.

Sounts like this was a nut case officer, there are many out there, that just like messing with people, it is possible the store was not going to press charges but wanted to scare you, and nothing will happen. But wanted the officer to really mess with you. On younger kids as a police officer we used to do that all the time

OK I was charged with theft over 500 in md... frm my job. The detectives came and questioned me, dumby me I confessed, they took me in a dark room one stood by the door with gun and badge exposed, and the other "nice lady" questioned me. There were a number of dif charges and your lawyer will make the best deal for you. I paid all my money back and unfortunately I couldn't come up with lute to pay a lawyer until the week before my last court date... asked for jury, asked for a continue, got it some how by myself, paid the very best attorney for the crime in my town 6k... I got 1 charge the others nolle pros and put on 3 yrs probation, however I also had a vop for a dui on this case... got both cases put together and got lucky cause my old job asked for no jail time... so what I'm saying to you is get a good lawyer cause they will probably charge you with both theft over and under... and pray and change your ways good luck
