So I made a really stupid mistake:( .

I work in an electronics store and a few days ago I got caught giving away a couple DVD's to a friend. I had actually done this twice. The first time I got away with, but the second... i got caught red handed. At that time, the Police were called in and they arrested me and my friend. The cop then read us our rights and said we were being charged for theft under $5000. He handed us a piece of paper with the listed court date and a fingerprinting date. This is my first run in with the law. I have such a clean record, I've never even gotten a speeding ticket. I don't know what made me do this. At the time I wasn't even thinking of what I was doing. I feel like a total idiot.. I'm a nursing student and volunteer at the hospital. I was a respected individual in my community and now I just messed everything up. I'm going to see a lawyer soon but I was just wondering if anyone knows what I'm in for:confused: ? the total value of stuff was around $300.

Don't mean to preach but you didn't "give away a couple of DVDs" - you were stealing. I think I would address this for what it is or you will not look very good to the Court.

That being said you will probably get a lecture and perhaps a fine and walk away from this. I would ask - in Court - if it will go on a permanent record or if they will allow you to make restitution, if you don't get into trouble in 6 months drop it and leave you "clean."

Also a "couple of DVDs" doesn't amount to $300. That's more like a dozen.

Yes you get an attorney. Most likely, as a first offender, you will be allowed to perform community service and have your record expunged after a probation period. Your attorney can help you do that.
