If a credit card company sues you ,what can they get? I mean can they garnish your wages, or cause you to lose your house, or have you thrown in jail. I have heard these rumors.

If they sue you and win.

They can attach your bank accounts

They can possibly put a lien on your house

They can garnish your wages

I agree with Fr Chuck.

I also wish to add that they can't put you in jail if you don't have the money to pay them via a court order.

If the Credit Card gets a judgment against you, they can garnishee your wages if they know where you work. They can put a lien against property that you own. They probably cannot force a sale of your HOME, because most states have a Homestead Exemption that protects a home against liens other than mortgages secured by the property. These exemptions can run $100K+. I believe that they can only throw you in jail for non payment of child support (or taxes in case of fraud). Debtor prisons have become a thing of the past. What the judgmant will do is screw up your credid for years to come. It will prevent you from getting a mortgage and other credit. It may increase the cost of auto and home insurance (because insurance companies can charge based on FICO scores). All in all, if you are able to pay the debt, pay it. If you are not able at this time, pay it when you can, and be sure to get and record a "satisfaction of judgment" to let the world know that the debt has been paid. Do the right thing, and time will heal the wounds.
Best of Luck

Let's just add here that there are no more debtor's prisons. They did away with those many, many years ago.
