Hi! I have a Kenmore washer that is a little over 2 years old (2 years, 2 months). This morning, Sunday, December 17, 2007, I was washing several loads of laundry and during the last load, it just stopped during the rinse cycle (it filled up to rinse, but that was it). I couldn't get it to do anything. We checked the outlet, but that is not the problem.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I have a call into Sears, but they can't come until Thursday (12/20). Also, I am probably going to have someone come out tomorrow, but this washer is covered (for parts) for years 2 through 5 for the gear case through Sears. Would this (the gear case) be a possible problem? Should I wait for Sears? Is the motor the gear case? If so, does anyone know approximately how much that would cost?

Thank you,

Dorothy

I think your problem is with the timer motor and not the gear case. Push the timer knob in and rotate the knob to a new start position and pull out. If the machine reaches the same spot in the cycle and then quits, its your timer. Bet that's not on the warranty any longer.

Hi! I did try that, but nothing. The machine won't do anything at all, only fills up.

Since it fills up we know you have power, the fill solenoid needs power to open. Other than that we won't know much else. The only other thing you could do is to bypass the timer and manually move your knob to the different settings of the cycle. Let it run about 10 minutes on each setting before pushing the knob in and moving to the next setting and pulling the knob out. It may tide you over until Thursday because you really should wait for Sears since parts may be under warranty. My entire answer is based on my belief that your timer is shot and I'm 95% sure of that but I'm not there doing any testing. My price is much better than Sears though.

Hi again! Thanks for your quick replies! Yes, I did try what you suggested, but nothing. I may have not explained the situation properly. Yesterday, Sunday, I did 2 loads of laundry. On the 3rd load, it washed it and pumped out the water and then filled up, but then nothing. I tried to get it to do something else by turning it to different wash cycles and rinse cycles, but, again, nothing. I took out the clothes and then got most of the water out with a cup. My husband checked the outlet the washer is plugged into, but it is working. I then turned it to the beginning of a wash cycle and it did start to fill up, but I turned it off. Didn't want to take all the water out again. So I really didn't try it again at the beginning of the cycle with water in it. There were no burning smells at all - just stopped working. I have someone coming out this morning, Monday, to check it. I hope that he is truthful in telling me what is wrong if it is something that would be covered by Sears. Of course, the part, if covered by Sears, is probably not going to be the expensive part - it would be the labor and trip charge from Sears that I would be responsible for.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Dorothy

Hi! Forgot to add this. Don't know if this has any bearing on problem. Since mid to late summer whenever the washer changes gears from washing to spinning to rinsing, it sometimes will make a loud banging sound. I had someone from Sears come out at the end of August to check this. He said that there was nothing wrong with it and that it was normal for it to do that. On Thursday of last week, it made that sound again and actually moved the washer. I don't overload and I always use the gentle wash cycle. Just thought I would mention this as I am not sure if it is related.
