We bought our home last July and it was only 1 year old. Since we moved from our last house, this house seems to have an OVERWHELMING dust problem. We know it is something in the HVAC system, but the house is only 2 years old.

My wife will dust and the next day, the same dust fibers are back. The strange thing is that there are lots of curly 1-2mm long blue and red fibers in our dust. In the last month now, my wife has developed a breathing problem in which she will cough and feel as if her airway has been constricted. Her doctor put her on an inhaler.

I have checked my main HVAC trunkline and spider ducts and they are all insulation wrapped around metal main lines, so I do not think the fiberglass insulation from the HVAC ducts is getting in the AC, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out where the 1-2mm blue and red fibers are coming from. Any suggestions? I am starting th think maybe they are coming from the dryer. Maybe the dryer vent has a leak somewhere, but the laundry room is no worse than anywhere in the house as far as the dust goes.

Why don't you start with a professional duct cleaning. Filters can be made from red and blue fibers.

A usual culrit is when HVAC systems are operated while the house is being constructed.

What does the filter look like in terms of dirt etc? Is it installed in the right direction?

We just had ServePro out on Tuesday to look at cleaning the ducts and they said they really did not need cleaning and were in VERY good condition. I use 3M Filtrete filters and keep them changed... and yes, I install them correctly. Also, they do not have red and blue fibers. The more I think of it, the more and more I am starting to lean towards the clothes dryer causing the majority or the "fiberous" dust.

We have a large (14"x30") main return in our hallway by the laundry room that did not have a return filter on it and I think it was huffing air right out of the hallway/laundry area and distributing it back into the house. Now our dust is out of control. I have since installed a filter on this return and it has helped some.

This weekend, I am going to check out the dryer vent and see what is up. It may not help much because today's dryers are not sealed very well anyhow.
