My dog was hit by a snowmobile, it ran right over him... how can I tell if he has any internal bleeding or broken bones? He is able to walk but is limping, and seems to be in pain... I'v given him bufferin (he is 17 years old)

Take him to the vet. There is no way to tell outwardly.

I don't mean to sound judgmental, but what would you do if your child was run over by a snowmobile?

Move over to the right a little. I'm going to run over you with a snowmobile. If you limp a little and seem to be in pain, I will feed you a Bufferin. I'm sure you will feel better in the morning.

Ok, now let's get serious. Please take this dog to the vet asap.

Broken bones are fairly obvious. You have a limb with a funny angle or it can't stand having its ribs touched. If you call and talk to the vet, he may be able to ask some things and decide if the exam can wait until Monday. He may give you sign to watch for and get back to him.

Never give a dog other OTC pain relievers. The dose is 5 mg per pound of body weight every 8 hours. A regular 325 mg table is about right for larger dogs.

I am sorry I wasn't online last night and didn't see this post untl now. Check his gums. If they are really white, there is internal bleeding going on. I hope that you have called the vet by now. He is in the position to assess if your dog needs to be brought in. I agree with labman regarding OTC meds. I don't think one Bufferin will hurt him but you shouldn't give him anything unless the vet says it is okay. You also need to ensure that your dog doesn't have any broken or fractured bones, and he isn't in chronic pain. Please follow your vets advice. He might be able to give him something else to ease the pain. If your dog is lucky enough to just be suffering from a severe bruising, it will take at least a week for him to recover. Just follow his lead. Don't force him to do anything and make sure he has a comfortable bed to lie on near the door. It will allow him to relieve himself without fear of him collapsing from overexertion. If he is bruised down to the bone, after a couple of days, you do need to encourage him a bit to move around. As I said, don't force him, but you do need to ensure that he moves around at least a little bit.
