So my husband was married to a German woman and they had two boys. She and the boys lived with him for 4-5 yrs. He was in the military and gone a lot. One of the times he was gone for 6m to Honduras. During this time she cleaned out their bank accounts and took the boys to Germany. He came back to piles of debt and divorce papers. The German courts ( he was not present because he no longer had any money to get to Germany with) took the child support back to when the kids were born and my husbands first payment was for 44,000. Well of course he did not have this since she took all of his money. Sooooo long story short both boys will be 18 this year. Even though he is on disability and only makes 1200a month he has consistently paid 400 a month for the kids plus money towards the first 44K bill. The bill is now down to 12K. We have spent the last year trying to buy a home and it keeps coming down to child support holding us up. Every time we call child support we seem to have a new case worker and no one seems to help us at all. Can we have his case reevaluated? Can they really keep making us pay the back support when the kids lived with him for that time and his wife never worked so he paid all the bills. How do we get help. I am tired of every time we want something having it ripped from us because of child support.

Yes they can demand payment of every penny until it is paid. And you you can hire an attorney, and file in the court where the chlld support is ordered for it to be modified. Assuming German law is close to US laws on this.

I was not aware that German civil courts could uphold and enforce child support in the US.
