View Full Version : Can A Felon Be A Librarian?

Hi All. And thanks for reading. A little background first:

I was charged almost 10 years ago for possession here in Florida. I then found out that I had 2 other charges out of Texas 3 years prior. (I wasn't arrested at the time. It was considered a sealed case... or something like that.) Anyway, I got probation for both and went on with my life.

I already have an associates in Web Design. I now HATE webdesign and am back in school to finish my bachelors. Things are going great I've got straight A's. I've decided I would like to go on to grad school and get my MLIS to become a librarian. I would like to either work in an academic library or become a law librarian.

Call me naïve or stupid, but I didn't know that felons had such a hard time getting jobs. For me, I was never asked, so I never told. But, I want to make sure that I don't waste my time trying to do something that cannot be done.

I haven't even had a ticket since my convictions and the ones here in Florida are hopefully being expunged. (That is being worked on now.) It doesn't seem like the Texas charges are going anywhere. (Delivery < 1g for a 2 hits of acid. No money taken. Just passed along.)

Sorry for the length. Any thoughts?

Normally there is no rule that they can not be. But the issue will be this, if you and 10 other people are applying for the job, none of the others have a felony and you do, who do they choose first

I can accept that. To me, that just means that I have to work that much harder to get what I want.
I'm shooting for (and have a good chance based off grades, etc.) of getting into one of the top library programs in the country. We'll just have to see what happens.

It's either this, or law school.

Hello geek:

If wondergirl doesn't answer here shortly, I'd PM her. She IS a librarian.
