Hi everyone
I was camping with a few friends and a few strangers a couple months ago. One of the girls had suddenly passed out and stopped breathing. After trying to wake her up she finally responded but again and again she kept passing out. This was in the middle of no where but the hospital was near so we decided the most quick way would be to drive her there ourselves. One of the strangers there volunteered the car he borrowed from a friend since he was too intoxicated. I then drove her to the hospital but on the way I did a 3 point turn and hit the exhaust on a curb. Either the curb was too high or the exhaust was lowered... He asked me to pay half the bill and I agreed. He told me 600, so 300 each and I asked to see the bill. Since it wasn't his car that he lent me, he had to go to the girl that lent him the car for the bill but he never responded to me. Now a couple months later I find out the bill is less than 300 dollars. Any response would be appreciated

Ps the girl is fine

If you want to pay for half, and have not done so, perhaps you can track down the owner of the car yourself. It might be that the guy thought by telling you double the price, then you would end up paying it all and never know any different? It could have ended a lot worse than it did, so even if you are out the full three hundred, consider it a cheap lesson if you learned anything from it. One more thought, and it might be considered tacky by some, but what about the girl that was taken to the hospital... is she willing to help pay since it happened while trying to help her... or does the blame game kick in and they leave you with all the responsibility?

I agreed to pay half of the 600 provided he show me the bill. He never did come up with the bill so I never gave the 300. It's not a big issue about the money, it's just the fact that he lied about everything. Does he not have any liability for volunteering his borrowed car and lying to me? If he doesn't than I will just give the money to the owner and be done with him. Thanks

Don't pay as you agreed until you see a bill - it's up to him to try to collect from you.

As far as volunteering the car and lying to you - has nothing to do with the damage and is not an issue.

Unfortunately there is no law against lying (except under oath). What it appears is this guy was looking to take advantage of the situation. I seriously doubt if all your $300 would have found its way to the car owner.

You can go one of two ways. Either do nothing until he comes up with a copy of the bill, or contact the car owner directly, get the bill and pay them directly. Personally I would choose the latter.

Thanks for the quick response everyone. I will contact the car owner today and try to get a copy of the bill.

Minh, keep in mind that is was your lying buddy who offered to split the bill with you, not the car owner. The car owner may expect you to pay the entire bill.

You I'm just going to get the bill from the owner, and ask the "buddy" if he still wants to split it like he said before. If he doesn't than I'll just pay the full amount. Thanks a lot for your help everyone. Greatly appreciated
