I recently had my main water line shut off to do some plumbing repair, which was done and water turned back on , no problems , until two days later I notice my basement had a good amount of water on the floor and the tpr valve is still releasing more . Im wondering if when they turned the water back on they some how gave it more pressure , or if it being cold for two days and then all of the sudden filling up with hot water had anything to do with it

Do you have a sprinkler system with a backflow preventer installed near the water meter? If not then change out the T & P valve.
Most valves are located on top of the heater, but if it's on the side then shut down the power to the heater and open up a hot water faucet to relieve the vacume amd, if the valve's on the side of the tank then drain the tank down below it and if it's located on top you just have to open up a faucet.
Un hook the discharge pipe from the valve and unscrew it. Wrap the threads of the replacement in Teflon Tape and install the new valve. Hook the discharge pipe uo and that's all there there' is to it. Turn the water and power back on and you're back in business.
Good luck, Tom
