I have a comfortmaker climate control heat pump/electric furnace. The compressor, (I think) the unit outside, doesn't seem to want to shut off and since it runs continuously even when the furnace backup (fan) turns off. I think because of this, it makes a red light on the tstat come on and it seems to make the "heat" smell hot. Not like burning wires, but just not normal, if that makes any sense. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have search for answers here, but didn't really find what I was looking for. I'll continue to look, but sort of need an answer soon. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Is your fan outside staying on also or just the compressor if both are staying on then you might want to check your contactor outside it may be stuck pulling in there is a button in the middle of the contactor that will be pulled in hopefully that is all it is.

Yes the fan is also on. I will have to check to see if the contactor is stuck. Any other suggestions in case that's not the problem?

You could have a short between the red and the wire to the coil of the contactor.
