My boyfriend is supposed to be paying child support for a child that may or may not be his. When the child turned 3 ( she is now 8) the mother finally contacted him, wanting support. He was in the hospital having back surgery on the day of the court hearing. He was told he was "father by default" and had to pay child support. I'm not sure how they arrived at the dollar amount as he was unable to work at the time due to his injury. He has called many times trying to get information but is always told there's nothing he can do as he was found to be the father by "default" which is stupid. He wants to relinquish rights to the child as he's not sure she's his nor has he been allowed ANY contact with her at all anyway. What do we do? We can't really afford a lawyer at this time. Thank you for any advice.

I would final a pition at family court asking for a DNA test! He the child is not his then he shouldn't have to pay for it.

Google legal aid, in your area. It may well be worth a lawyer to get this cleared up.

He needs an attorney. First if he did not get the court case continued, so he was found to be the father, what is suppose to happen is a DNA test to find out if he is. But if the court rules he is, he is, until he can prove , if allowed, he is not.
And the amount is based on state rules with a mim amount set in most states
