How does one get rid of these to replace with wood without tearing off the plaster behind?

Use a flat bar for scraping paint and slide it down the back of the tile in a slicing mode, be sure to cut along the top of the tile before removing as some people run a bead of silicone as a sealer to finish it off nice.
