I have medium brown hair with natural light brown highlights. I want to dye the bottome of it black and the top of it dark brown, I have never dyed or highlighted my hair ever so I don't really know what to do. I want to do it myself, I picked out the color in herbal essences but I'm afraid of my hair turning red or orange. Do you think this will happen since I'm only going from med brown to dark brown and black? Can anyone help me?

Let me get this straight, you want the front and crown of your hair to be dark brown, and behind the ear from the crown down to be black?
Someone has to help you. This will take more than a day. Separate the part you want dark brown--comb it forward and tie and clip it just over your forehead. Then, comb the hair on the back of your head down.
Get out the black hair dye and mix according to instructions. Have your friend apply the black die in rows going down and continue following directions. Wash hair with shampoo provided with black dye.
Now, all your hair has to dry. It is better not to dye newly washed hair, so if you can wait a few days to do the top, that would be better.
Separate the hair you want to dye dark brown from the already dyed black hair. Mix the hair dye. Have a towel for your eyes. Have your friend apply the brown dye in rows... the hair is combed forward. Follow directions. Then have her shampoo out the brown dye without touching the black dyed hair.

if i have medium brown hair, will it turn orange or yellow if i dye it dark brown or black? how do i dye the underneath of my hair black and on top brown? will this take more than 1 day?
If you apply a black hair color on medium brown hair, it will turn out black. It's much easier to go darker than it is to go lighter. The two-toned hair effect is quite popular amongst the younger crowd. To color underneath your hair black, you will need to take a tail comb and section the hair by making a straight line from one ear across the head to the other ear. Then, twist the top part of your hair and clip it with a hair clip to get it out of the way and then apply your hair dye to the loose bottom portion of your hair. There's no need to color the top portion of your hair brown since it's already brown. It only takes 25-45 minutes for hair color applications to work.

I think you should just start of with streaks through your hair this is very easy just choose your desired color and get the cap and streak your hair. It will be good as it won't turn patchy or too red or anything on your lighter hair and it will blend in and look natural. After this I think you should choose a natural black because other blacks may have blue in it and just dye the bottom . Easy!
