View Full Version : Using Kongs

Trinkett loves, Loves, LOVES her Kong! She will happily flop down with it and work it until she can get every last bit of food out of it. (Generally I fill it with her kibble and seal it with a little wet food. Sometimes I briefly dampen the kibble first, and then freeze it.)

Is there any reason that I can't feed her all (or at least the majority) of her food out of them? I might mix in some of the other styles, but in general get rid of the bowl and just use the treat toys? I'm wondering if doing it all the time would make it boring for her, or if she would just enjoy getting to work for her supper.

And does anyone have any advice for stuffing them? I want to make it "not easy", but not super hard. Putting a milkbone-type treat in them, for example, frustrates her because she eats off the part sticking out, and then will try and get kibble past the inside piece. But she can't seem to work the inside piece out. (To be honest, I had trouble getting it out when I went to clean the Kong!) She generally gets the food out by persistently licking in the opening and manipulating theKong, and doesn't do much, if any, chewing ON the Kong, which is why the large pieces of food seem to be a problem.

And last question: How often should these things be cleaned, and is there any recommended method for doing so?

My dog also loves her kong, we fill it with peanut butter and then stick it in the freezer at night time. We clean her kong every night before we fill it for the next day. Also after my dog finishes getting the peanut butter out she will sit down on her bed and chew it for half an hour. My dog never gets bored of her toys, but try something different every now and then.

I don't see any problem if most of a dog's chow comes out of a Kong. Might be n alternative for the dogs that need to be slowed down when they eat. You could try a kibble ball too. I think the original was the Buster Cube, but several companies make them.

How often to clean? That may depend on how clean she gets it. I haven't washed our stainless steel bowels in years. They are polished clean daily. If it looks or feels gross, wash it.
