I have been trying for months to get rid of a volume control from my task bar, it turned up at some point (I think its to do with Java) as well as with the original volume control that was there from the start.

As my laptop has external control for volume, video, etc, these have stopped working properly since this bloody thing turned up!

I have tried system restore (doesnt date back enough)
Taskbar properties (only enables you to hide it, not remove it)
Looked through everything on control panel.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!

AND... how do I stop software putting things on my taskbar when they don't give me the option. I want to remove Nokia suite from the same place too!

Under Control Panel in Sounds and Audio Devices uncheck the show Volume box.

I believe that you are talking about a second volume control other that the installed control, right click on it and see what kind of info is available from the right click, properties or anything, get back to us.

Yey, must have been removing java that shifted it, but it didn't come off until today for some reason.

So when I have to download java again, because I'm sure I will at some point. How do I stop it putting a second volume control on the taskbar, if it doesn't give me the option when downloading it?

Oh.. and... Im using a Dell 6400 laptop, now that the icon thing is sorted, there is another thing missing...

When I used the external controls along the front of the laptop, the volume adjust would come up on the screen ontop of everything, like on a TV. Its stopped doing that since the java thing, can I get that back?

Go in as mentioned by ScottGem and play with the restore to default settings??

Well, don't restore your computer anymore, that's just making it hard on yourself. You cannot get rid of the volume control icon, as far as I know. It doesn't really bother me too much, but as I understand it bothers you. I think that I might be able to help.

You cannot get rid of it, but you can definitely hide it.

Right click on your taskbar, and click properties

And on the first option from the bottom, there should be something there that says "hide inactive icons". Click that. This will hide your volume cont

I have now got rid of the second icon by removing JAVA.

I am trying to restore the visual volume that appears on the screen when you change the volume/mute, it shows you how loud the volume is.

This disappeared when JAVA was put on.

There is nothing in the sound bit through control panel that relates to this.

This is a Dell-Inspirion thing, I've not seen it on other laptops

My question was 'how do I get this back?'

My second question was when I have to put JAVA back on the computer, how do I stop this all happening again, if it doesn't give me the option while downloading?

You could right click on the small speaker shown in the task bar and click on the Adjust audio properties' . You can uncheck the box in front of "Place volume icon in the taskbar"

Doesn't give me the option,

But I put java back on and it hasn't appeared back, so I think its all OK now, apart from the fact that the visuals for the oroginal volume control/sounds don't appear on the screen

I think a Dell specialist is the only person to help with this

Go to start -> run ->gpedit.msc

Then go to local computer policy -> user cofiguration -> administrative templates-> start menu and taskbar

And find "hide the notification area"

Start -> run ->gpedit.msc

Gpedit.msc will not run from the run dialog box?? Regedit will run.

What's to know, I copied your text, pasted it in the Run box, it didn't work, simple as that, so I tried it a couple of ways, none of them worked.

Are you running windows xp?

Yes Sir, Home Edition, I use regedit all the time. Thanks for the list above though. Is there a website that explains all those in more detail please.
