You need to check with the doctor because some herbs mixed with prescription meds that thin blood can thin your blood way too much and so forth. If your doctor is against herbal supplements or doesn't know anything about them then check with an alternative medicine doctor. I can refer you to a couple in my area that could answer your questions.
Beta sitosterol (in saw palmentto) is the #1 herb you would want to take
Such as this Beta Sitosterol - Men's Prostate Support Information : Vitabase (http://www.vitabase.com/supplements/mens-health-prostate/betasitosterol.aspx?adid=625)
IF you buy saw palmentto instead of straight beta sitosterol
You have to make sure it is a good reputable one since with most saw palmentto you might as well take saw dust.
Green tea is also good
Make sure it has polyphenol and is a good quality (no sugars, dyes, preservatives, etc... )
Snapple and Lipton N0T good Sobe and Fuze are okay.
vitamin E
Zinc -after one month taking zinc add 2 mg copper
Flaxseed oil and amino acids are also good
Eat plenty of fresh bright colored fruits and vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, berries, pomegranates, cherries, apples, and green-leaf vegetables. Dried apricots and pumpkin seeds.
Throw away your table salt and use fine granule sea salt same taste just healthier.
Cut down on meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol
Cut out greasy foods, junk foods, fast foods, diet foods and artificial sweeteners.

Please check with your doctor before resorting to any of the above posted advice.
I don't mean anything bad Nohelp4u, but many herbs counteract or can cause a serious reaction to prescription medication, and it seems that you already know that.
If I knew what the med is you take, I could advise whether the above herbs are appropriate. I don't know the herbs as well as she does, but my text will reflect what herbs in particular to stay away from.

N0help4u agrees: I did state for him to check with the doc at the beginning of my reply :)
Yeah, I know you did, but you know how some of the people here read only half posts, I was just reiterating what you had said above.

Then you have a good start.
Like J_9 said if you are taking meds check the interactions with the doc before starting them.
I just noticed you said you take blood thinners. It is best not to increase your green leafy vegetables because they contain vitamin K which can ALSO thin your blood and you don't want to get your blood T00 thin.

What meds are you taking? Coumadin? Warfarin?
Although NH4U may very well be right, we need to know what meds you are taking first. There are a lot of interactions between the meds and herbs that could be dangerous.

With blood thinner meds it is not good to take
vitamin E
or
essential fatty acids
drink the green tea in moderation
Anticoagulants (blood thinners) + asparagus, spinach, leafy vegetables or other foods rich in vitamin K = more blood clotting, which can lead to heart attack or stroke.
These sites cover blood thinning foods, herbs and vitamins
Blood Thinners and Nutritional Supplement (http://www.lammd.com/opinion/blood_thinners_and_nutritional_supplement.cfm)
Warfarin Interactions with Drugs, Herbs and Food (http://www.enotalone.com/article/10268.html)
It is always best to research your health issues and learn to be in tune with your body and understand your personal health and go over everything with your doctor for the optimal plan for your health.
