Young Assault Victim's Death Ruled A Homicide
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―

The Medical Examiner's Office has now ruled the death of the little girl, who police say was assaulted in her home last week, a homicide.

According to the Medical Examiner's Office, the 10-month-old girl died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Authorities report that she also had bruises on her face, arms and legs as well as a bite mark in her chest.

Now, the man accused in the case, 30-year-old Clinton Smith, who officials say was the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother, could be facing more charges.

Smith is being held at Allegheny County Jail and is already facing several charges including aggravated assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, reckless endangerment and child endangerment.

He was originally scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, but officials say the new charges could be filed as early as Monday.

Police say the little girl's mother, Latoya Jackson, left the girl in Smith's care while she went to work last Thursday.

But when she returned, officials say she found the girl unresponsive and called for help.

According to investigators, Smith initially said he didn't know how the girl got her injuries, but he did acknowledge that he and his 2-year-old son were the only ones at home at the time the injuries happened.

The KDKA TV news just said he had had prior sexual charges.

What do you think the answer should be done to deter people from even thinking of doing these things before it is too late for others?

It is enough to make anyone have nightmares. The thought of what horrible things humans are capable of, can make a person sick.
What can be done in advance?
One thing is not to leave a defenseless child with ANYONE you do not know well, and for a LONG time. Especially young men. Especially young men not the child's father. In the news, how often is it the Mom's boyfriend who is the one who hurt the child? Way too often.
That does not mean women aren't capable of awful things either. Even family members. I am by no means saying all men are capable of these things, FAR FROM IT. Just that some women are far too trusting with boyfriends, especially recent boyfriends.
A child care facility which is licensed and presumably monitored is better, but not 100% safe either. Always , always, check on the place where your child is being cared for.
As for those people who abuse their children, There is no way to see through walls, children are defenseless. C.P.S. is not trained in detectivework, There is very little that can be done for abuse cases unless C.P.S. actually sees injury.

Even then they usually want to leave the child with the family. It all depends on the judgement call of the caseworker, with all the variables of their life experience or lack of. Calls to investigate actual criminal abuse are handled virtually the same as more trivial complaints.
Still, people should report any abuse or suspected abuse of children. It is the only chance they have. Even grandparents have no rights unless they go to court and are awarded custody.
What should be done to these monsters who hurt or kill children? What would deter them? Maybe nothing ,but if caught, never ever ever again let them see light of day .
We followed the Danielle Van Damme case here in San Diego area a few years back. The little girl was stolen from her bed, with her father in the house. The well educated, well spoken well dressed, man who was convicted gave no clue as to why, except he was addicted to child porn.
Go after the people who deal in child porn and maybe there would be fewer child murder cases.

Kiddie porn is only a part of the problem. I agree going after kiddie porn purveyors would definitely help, but it is not the entire answer to the problem? What about the legal porn sites with adult models that post stuff that looks like kiddie porn but isn't? That too feeds into the problem, and there's nothing illegal about it.

The problem to a great degree is a social one... we have become to lax in our standards of morality. Sex on TV, cable and in movies has become normal. And we want more of it. We have lost much of our moral compass.

The problem is, as Excon would be more than happy to point out, that we can't legislate morality. Morality has to start in the home. Which means that we need to change the entire social base of the nation... we need to re-educate people in how to be good parents, how to teach their children morality, and how to become more spiritually connected with their fellow man. We need to start teaching the old ideals: love of god and country and love for our fellows and disdain for immorality... much of what has been lost to modern social convention that values "rights" above "responsibilities". We have become so enamored of "rights" that we have forgotten that we also have responsibilities to society. And without the ability to follow those responsibilities, we lose our morality.

How do we accomplish the goal of re-teaching that type of responsibility? Because without such a change in the social base of this country, our moral fiber will continue to decline. It must start in the home. It has to start with the traditional family unit. And everything needs to flow out from there.
