During that time he called his sister and told her he would not be around for quite a while and not to worry. One year later authorities contacted her and told her that his remains had been found but that there was not much left and that she would not be able to see them or identify him. He had been identified through dental records. My question is does anyone think he may have went into witness protection?

I doubt it, they don't really put people into the witness protection program unless they inform the government of information that someone may not want the government to know, and the government returns the favor by protecting the person from that someone.

Anything is possible but unless he went to the government for protection, in exchange for information and testimony, it is unlikely he is in the witness protection program. You will never know, which, from the sounds of it, is supposed to be that way. If he is still alive, he can never contact you and you should not look for him.

Ok, when I first posted the question earlier I said that it was a friend of mine and that was true, but he is/was also my son's father. Our son is 17 now and his father disappeared/died almost 3yrs. Ago. I know I shouldn't dig into this thing in case he is in witness protection, but my son is struggling so bad right now and I guess I just wish he had his dad. I know.. I know.. I'm pretty selfish.

I honestly don't think any answer will really help, because this is a case of I'll probably never know until I die. I just can't let it go.

Not sure if I'd be wishing for his dad at a time like this for your son, considering the fact that he went on the run from the law... and evidently got mixed up in the wrong crowd... How could that be beneficial?

I don't want to sound mean, and hope there is someone to help you both, otherwise you're all your son has. If you need help with the issues for your son, people on here seem genuinely interested in helping. I know it helps to get input from others.

I doubt it, there is seldom death fakes for the witness protectino program, that is all TV. What happens, is the person in the program has to appear in court to testify against the person they have info on. And have to be available to testify for any appeals that may happen over dozens of years.

And over a 10 year time frame, seldom does most people stay in it, most find they end up contacting some family member or decide to move back to their old life.

But if they do it correctly, they will never contact anyone ever again.

You'll probably never know but if he IS in a witness protection program, hiding all these years, and your friend happens to find him... then what happens to him?
