How far from the wall should you install a handicap toilet?

A handicapped toilet roughs the same as a regular bowl, 12" to the center of the flange. What makes the bowl a handicapped one is the additional height.

If it's a residential installation, then the minimum side clearance should be no less than 18" from the center of the closet flange.

If it's a commercial installation, then you need to check with your local Plumbing Inspector or Health Department to determine what their expectations are -- I could tell you how my local authority interprets the Americans With Disabilities Act requirements, but I've found that interpretations and expectations vary from locale to locale.

HI Sandra...

As iamgrowler posted back in 2007 (above post) you must have a MINIMUM of 18" from the center of the toilet to the wall.

Is that 18" to both sides?

Yes, for a handicap toilet you need a minimum of a 36" space, or 18" on each side of the center of the toilet for it to comply with the ADA requirements.

Further requirements for grab bars and sink heights, etc. can be found at:

ADA Home Page - ada.gov - Information and Technical Assistance on the Americans with Disabilities Act (http://www.ada.gov/)

More questions just let me know, OK?
