Hello I have a gas furnace made by Amana (GUIA/B/C/D Gas Fired Warm Air Furnance). When I turn my thermostat to auto and set the temp for the heat to come on it will not come on. The thermostat makes a clicking noise but no blower. I have replaced the rhermostat so that is not it. If I turn the switch from auto to on the blower comes on. On a very few occasions it works fine but they seem to get fewer and fewer. Any idea's? I would like to fix it myself if possible. Thanks MAC

Check to make sure your drains are clean

How do you do that? I see the PVC pipes running from the furnace to outside of the house. MAC

A backed up condensate drain is one of a number of things that can keep a furnace from running. The On setting uses entirely different controls for the blower from heat, so it running proves nothing. Take the cover off there is a drain at the bottom of the inducer motor it's attached buy a spring clip a lot of times on a Amana you could check to see if the hot surface ignitor glows and if the burners come on for more than 10 seconds if not your flame sensor needs to be cleaned

Is the thermostat programmed for the fan to start when the furnace temp rises to a preset point

Yes the thermostat is setup correctly. I disconnected the thermostat and put on a new one. I had the same problem so I put the oly thermostat back on. After I put on old thermostat the heat came on so I let it run a bit. I shut it off and tried to turn it on again and it would not turn on. I have not had a chance to check the drain yet. I will do that this week.

Its strange that sometimes it works and but most of the time it doesn't. It seems like if it was a drain issue it would not work at all if a plugged drain keeps the unit from working. Not sure what is going on but this is strange to me.

As I said, you need to watch and see how far in the sequence it gets before it fails to start up. A sticky pressure switch or dirty flame sensor could cause such problems. So could a relay on the control board going bad.

Now both units in my house are doing the same thing. I went up in the atic this am and here is what I can see without taking the unit apart.

I hear a blower fan come on. I look inside the front grill/vents and can see a glowing red stick. I hear the gas come on that looks to lite the red glowing stick to a blue flame. It blows blue flame for a couple seconds then goes out. The blower cuts off then after a couple seconds the routine starts over. My downstairs unit will do this over and over while my up stairs will try that routine once the shut off. Any ideas? I am trying to fix the units myself due to money issues but with no heat in the house and two small kids I am going to have to act fast. Thanks Mac

If you have a flame sensor on these units you need to clean them to stop the short cycling. Sand paper or steel wool will work.

A flame sensor is a small piece of metat about the size of a pencil lead that goes into a white ceramic base. They get dirty/corroded over time and will not send as signal back to the controler.

Where do I find the flame sensor on an Amana Gas Furnace? I am looking at page 82 & 83 but do not see my issue listed? Also what is the Red LED they are talking about on page 82 & 83? Thanks MAC

OK found the sesor. It's a grey poruse material that is dark grey near the cermaic and white'ish all over. I took sand paper to it and did get a little of the white off but not much. I put it back in and now the heat works in my downstairs area. Do you think that is the cause of my issue (seems to me it might very well be)? Is this something I can purchase online or is a supply house and replace myself? Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like to me you just tried to clean your hot surface ignitor. It brakes very easy and should never be touched with your fingers, and is not the part you should be cleaning ever. Flame sensor-- Small metal rod(wire) sets in front of the burners with one wire going to it. Good luck.

The reason I said that is a flame sensor is a SOLID metal rod with ceramic on the bottom and a hot surface ignitor is PORUSE on top with ceramic on the bottom.
