Who do you report a debt collecter to that harasses a person for a debt
That has been proven they don't owe?

I have the same problem, they keep harassing me even though I'm not the person who owes the debt! I have no debts actually, and they are calling me instead of the person they really want, it ruined my birthday and they called during a huge test at college, it really made me angry. Here's what people told me to do.

Google the "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act". In it you'll find that you can send a collection agency a notice to cease and desist ALL contact. Send them one. Send it certified, return receipt requested.

Yes you can send the a cease and desist letter but you may want to go further to make sure they don't report it to your credit. You may want to call the collection agency and talk to a supervisor. Have them contact the original creditor and get personal info such as birth date, social security info. Once they do that, you can verify with them that its not you.

I think I will be writing that letter next week as they tried to harass me again yesterday. They call and treat me like I'm a child when I am in fact an adult and they act like I'm really stupid and pump me for information and won't tell me what it's about although I googled their phone number and found it was the collection service of a slimeball under the guise of the law offices of sam streeter, they lied to me and told me they were the law office of richard clarke. They buy debts and then jack them up and harass and threaten people until they can sue or they pay even though they have no experience in collecting and debt law.. Collectors who harass are human scum.

You an also turn them in to the Federal Trade Comssion after you send the letter you can go online and fill out the form telling them everything that happened and start keeping a record of it that way if it goes to court than you can porve something.
