It's been a while that I have noticed a faint but terrible smell of rotten broccoli/cabbage in my upstairs. It seems to be coming from the upstairs where the water heater is located. The bathroom is on one side and my bedroom is across and my daughter's room is next to mine. Some days it's stronger than other days. Luckily, I work outside of the home and am gone for over 8 hours a day. I'm not sure what to do? I own my own home. It is a townhouse.

If this is sewer gas the first things I would suspect is the wax ring under the toilet. Is the smell strongest in the bathroom?

No not really. It kind of just lingers in the air upstairs. I can also smell it when I am laying down in my bedroom. It's driving me crazy. Plus, I had both toilets replaced. Upstairs and downstairs by a plumber. But, the smell was there before I had them replaced.

Its sewer gases coming from hotwater tank drain, the water has evapourated in the s trap. Pour 1/2 L of water down the drain every three months and this should solve your problem.
