My Toshiba Satellite A135-S4666 has 1GB mem installed. I have 1 more slot for more mem. What would happen if I used 2GB in the extra slot? Meaning 3GB instead of 2GB, would Vista recognize it or do both mems have to match?

The problem you have is will the PC recognize the mismatched memory. My immediate suspicion is yes. Please check the Owner's manual for the PC. It will tell you if you can use mismatched memory.

If the memory Bus, speed of the memory and the "wait state" are the same you should be okay. Windows Vista should work just fine, especially if it recognizes >3G in memory
