I would like to upgrade the memory on my laptop. I have an HP pavilion dv6110us notebook. I've seen memory upgrades at other places for cheaper prices than on the hp website. Why is a memory upgrade cheaper at some places, is it still the same quality? Is there a way that I can find out what kind of memory I would need to be able to buy it on other sites?

Thank you

Your system manual or the HP site should tell you exactly what type of RAM you need. According to them you need DDR2 PC2-5300 modules. There are two slots that accept either 512 or 1G modules. For a max of 2G. If you currently have 1G, you probably have 2 512M modules which means can upgrade to 1.5G by replacing one module or 2G by replacing both.

You can usually get name brand modules for less that the computer manufacturer will charge.

Places like Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com), allow you to select the application of the memory. It will give you alternate information about the product like: Must be in pairs by same manufacturer etc. You still have to shop around. Memory is a volatile market.
