My eight week old daughter has a small purple bump that comes out of her soft spot. I have brought her to her pediatrician and all he said was that it may just be extra skin and that we will keep a eye on it. I really do not think it is extra skin because you can phycally move the bump? Any ideas.

How was she delivered? Vaginal? Forceps? Vacuum Extraction? Does she have jaundice?

A purple bump on the soft spot indicates something called a hematoma which is nothing to worry about really. It will go away on it's own if that is what this is.

She was delivered vaginally. It was a very fast delivery, one hour from start to finish. Her heartrate did drop so he had me push her out in one push. This is my fourth child and I have never seen this. I am also a daycare provider and yet have never seen this. What is a hematoma? Thanks for the quick response.

A hematoma is very common, especially with a quick labor like yours.

Basically a hematoma is a bruise. If you work in daycare you won't see a hematoma as it is typically resolved by the time you would get the baby.

It really is nothing to worry about. It happens quite often.

Wouldn't she have had this from birth on? She didn't develop the purple bump until she was three weeks old?

Okay, then, is her fontanel ( soft spot) bulging or depressed? Does it feel normal?

How about feeding, what kind of feeding is she getting? Formula? Breast?

Her soft spot is normal except for a bump that sticks out of it. It is about the size of a marble. Like half the marble sticks out. She was bottle feed with brest milk for the first four weeks then I gradually mixed in formula (soy milk) with the breast milk. Since about six and a half weeks she has been totally been on formula.
