Why would they? How would the moon and sun interact directly?

The sun rising and setting is caused by the earth spinning on it's axis revealing one face to the sun at a time.

The moon's phases are due it rotating around the earth and only one side ever being lit. This page has an animation which explains it better Moon & Earth Phase Viewer (http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/moonphase/)

So you see they are independent events, they may appaer to interect but that will just be patterns produced by each cycle.

Not on sunset, but it has major effects on the tide.
