how do you solve this using elimination?

x+2y=1
4x+y=11

you need to either get x or y equal to cancel out but one has to be a negative.

x+2y=1 --> -4(x+2y=1) --> -4x-8y=-4
4x+y=11 ------> + 4x+y=11
-----------
0-7y=7 ---> y=-1

Now plug that for X: (Use any equation)

4x+(-1)=11 --> 4x-1=11
+1 +1
4x=12 --> x=3

The answer is: (3,-1)
