My new doggy Annie just finished her kennel cough meds and I have seen a huge improvement in her personality, she is actually energetic now! But I have noticed that every so often (6-7 times a day) she does this strange internal hacking thing. She will be laying down then all of a sudden she will bolt up and start, I guess the best way I could think to describe it is like an internal sneeze, or like she's choking on something, but then it stopped after a few coughs . It started about 5 days ago and I have no idea what it is or what to do about it.

Try to call the vet today. It could be a normal trailing off the kennel cough and nothing to worry about or the beginning of a relapse. The vet should be happy to explain if you don't need to come in.

Definitely follow up with the vet as labman states. You need to make sure that she is completely over her kennel cough.

Just as an FYI, depending on the breed of dog you have, there are some dogs that when excited during play or running around, have a tendency to gulp in too much air, and they will cough a lot. Also, many times, dogs will have an inward sneeze or a sneezing fit. If it appears that your dog might be experiencing either of these in which these noises happen in rapid succession in combination with her seeming to have trouble breathing, grab a favorite toy and distract her with it, talking in an excited voice, run around,. basically anything you can do to refocus her attention onto something else. It will break these "fits."

She has been doing it a lot more often but I have noticed if I call her name in a playful voice and pet her and stuff she stops. I am calling the vet tomorrow to do a follow up appointment plus she needs a rabies booster and her license
