I've had problems with the drains in the bathroom. When the bathtub drains, it comes up in the toilet, or when flushing the toilet it comes up in the bathtub. I had a plumber come over and he snaked out the line with no success. He had me to dig up the sewer line, and said he'd be back once it was found. Never came back.
The line that I dug up doesn't seem to be clogged, as when I run water in the kitchen it comes out the pipe that I dug up.
Could this problem be caused by the vent pipe being clogged? That was my thought on this problem, but he said that it would cost an extra $75.00 for that to be done.

However to answer your question. Your plumber was blowing smoke just to get off the job. I can state right now that it isn't a vent problem or a clog in your sewer lin. Your plumber completely missed the boat when he didn't snake out the bathroom branch from the bathrooms lavatory roof vent. I don't know what he snaked out but it was evidently the wrong line. The fact that he was going to charge you a extra 75$ to do what he should have done in the first place tells me that. Bottom line! Your plumber was stumped and took your money and ran.
Your problem's not in the sewer, it's in the bathroom branch. Get another plumber and have him snake out the lavatory vent. Good luck, Tom

Hey! I thought that the vent was the problem in the first place. The first plumber never came back, and I had to call another one the next day.Told him what the problem was, and he went right to the roof. Fixed the problem right off.
First plumber never came back, and he left his shovel, and some extension cords here. Oh well! I didn't pay him anyway, and the cords, and shovel must be my pay for having to dig up the line and covering it back up.
